A Journey of Faith and Discovery in Highlands County

The Order of Christian Initiation of Adults (OCIA)—formerly known as RCIA—is a process designed for adults who, after hearing the mystery of Christ proclaimed, consciously and freely seek the living God. We warmly welcome seekers from Lake Placid, Sebring, Venus, and surrounding communities.

This isn't just a traditional classroom lecture; it's a supportive spiritual journey. We provide a welcoming, zero-pressure environment to ask real questions, learn about Catholic teachings, and grow in a personal relationship with Christ.

  • No pressure: Inquiring or attending does not obligate you to become Catholic.
  • Open to all: Unbaptized adults, baptized Christians, and adult Catholics needing Confirmation.
  • Community-focused: Walk this journey with supportive sponsors, mentors, and team members.

Frequently Asked Questions about OCIA / RCIA

Have questions about joining the Catholic Church or attending our sessions? Here are answers to the most common questions we receive.

What is the difference between OCIA and RCIA?

You will often hear these terms used interchangeably! RCIA stands for the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults. The Catholic Church recently updated the official English translation to OCIA, which stands for the Order of Christian Initiation of Adults. It is the exact same process and journey of faith.

Do I have to commit to becoming Catholic to attend?

Not at all. The initial phase of OCIA is called the "Inquiry" phase. It is a zero-pressure time to ask questions, learn about Catholic teachings, and discern if God is calling you to the Church.

What if I have already been baptized in another Christian denomination?

We welcome you! Many people who join our Lake Placid OCIA program come from other Christian traditions. Because the Catholic Church recognizes all valid Christian baptisms, you will not need to be re-baptized; instead, you will prepare to receive Confirmation and Holy Communion.

How much does the OCIA program cost?

There is absolutely no cost to participate in OCIA at St. James Catholic Church. All materials, books, and resources are provided for you free of charge.

What if my schedule makes it hard to attend Monday night classes?
